IMPORTANCE of DAILY MOVEMENT.

Movement is usually taken for granted until there is pain and usually, the resultant restriction of movement.  The majority of joint in the body that allow movement are synovial joints. (see this month’s blog for more information ).

However, we all develop a usual pattern (habit) of movement, and as we age, our bodies become more asymmetrical.

For synovial joints and the articular cartilage on the bone ends, to remain healthy, daily movement is required. Many of the joints, especially the smaller joints do not get a full Range of Motion (RoM) on a daily basis.

A twice daily pattern to develop, to maintain health in the joints, is to wake up all joints in the morning to encourage the flow of nourishing synovial fluid into the joint, and then in the evening, another round of full RoM to ensure all metabolic by-products are removed from the synovial fluid.

This daily practice will go a long way towards keeping your joint healthy and mobile.

Every joint in the body that is mobile, is usually filled with synovial fluid. Understanding the correct Range of Motion (RoM) for each joint helps to keep the synovial fluid flow into the joint and therefore the articular cartilage healthy, Daily repetitive movements of joints can cause abnormal wear and tear on the articular cartilage.

Know the correct RoM for each joint and ensure daily activity, especially on joints that are frequently used.
